Abstract

This article examines the tangible and intangible heritage of the Ombilin Coal Mining Heritage of Sawahlunto and addresses the preservation challenges affecting its sustainability. The study specifically investigates the forms of heritage associated with the mining landscape and the principal threats that may compromise their continued preservation. Using a qualitative approach based on a literature review, the study draws on books, official UNESCO documents, journal articles, theses, reports, and online databases. The findings show that the Ombilin Coal Mining Heritage encompasses tangible heritage, including former mining sites and supporting facilities, as well as diverse forms of intangible cultural heritage associated with the historical mining landscape. The literature further identifies development pressure, environmental deterioration, natural hazards, and human-induced disasters as major threats to the integrity and continuity of these heritage components. These findings demonstrate that the significance of Ombilin derives from the interrelationship between its tangible and intangible heritage, requiring preservation approaches that address both dimensions and their respective vulnerabilities. The study contributes to a more integrated understanding of the heritage values and preservation challenges affecting the sustainability of the Ombilin Coal Mining Heritage of Sawahlunto.
